Surgical management of oral pathology

The surgical specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery bridges the gap between medicine and dentistry and places our surgeons at the forefront of managing lesions of the oral cavity.

This may include lesions of the oral mucosa, palate, gums and tongue as well as lesions that arise within the jaw bones. Fortunately the majority of the pathology that we see is benign in nature however bony pathology may often require some sort of reconstruction to facilitate full dental rehabilitation. This may involve bone grafting and dental implant provision.

More significant pathology may involve several different surgical and medical specialists. We are frequently called upon to manage the adverse effects of radiation therapy and some anti-cancer medications.
